St. Petersburg State University marks its 280th birthday
 
The UniversityThe famed St. Petersburg State University, one of the top educational institutions in the World and the oldest university in Russia, marked its 280th birthday on February 8th, 2004.

Peter the Great signed a decree on the foundation of the Russian Academy of Science and St. Petersburg University on this date in 1724. It was the first university in Russia. Since that time the university's graduates have included famous names such as natural scientist Mikhail Lomonosov; Dmitry Mendeleyev, who founded the Periodic Table of Elements, physiologist Ivan Pavlov (famous for his discovery in human and animal reflexes – “Pavlov’s dogs”), writer Nikolai Chernyshevsky, poet Alexander Blok, and great composers Mikhail Glinka and Igor Stravinsky. Eight Nobel Prize winners are graduates of St. Petersburg State University (including biologist Ivan Pavlov, economist Vasily Leontiev and poet Joseph Brodsky). Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), leader of the Bolshevik revolution, graduated from the university as a lawyer. President Vladimir Putin graduated from the university's law department as well.

Today, the University has over 20 thousand students, 2000 professors, 210 departments and a library with 4 million volumes.

Members of our R&D lab act as coaches for the University's ACM International Collegiate Programming Team. The teams coached by our lab were World and European Champions in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contests in 2000 and 2001. Furthermore, for the last 5 years teams coached by members of our lab have been in the top ten of ACM ICPC World Finals. Many members of these successful teams have joined our R&D lab.


An architectural landmark University red-and-white building stretches for 440 yards and actually consists of 12 buildings standing side by side. It was built between 1722 and 1742, on Vasilievsky Island, and was intended for the twelve government bodies of Russia (Peter the Great's Senat, Synod, and ten ministries - collegii). In 1835 the building was given to St Petersburg University and now serves as its main Administrative building.
